Boys and Girls Club: San Carlos Apache Reservation Team

Location: San Carlos, Arizona

Issue Area: Urban Renewal

www.sancarlosapache.com

The San Carlos Apache Reservation in San Carlos, Arizona was founded in 1872 for the Chiricahua Apache people. Also known as “Hell’s Forty Acres,” it is one of the poorest Indian reservations in the United States, with high unemployment and a poverty rate of over 60% along with local environmental problems. A community not often seen or acknowledged by privileged American eyes, many Native Americans that live on reservation suffer through many problems, such as alcoholism, obesity, low education attainment, and depression.

On this Urban Renewal trip, we will have the opportunity to meet the people on the reservation, experience their culture, understand their background, and do whatever we can to assist their lives there. Our team will work alongside the Boys and Girls club, doing projects such as painting murals, facilitating afterschool projects, and leading seminars for local high school students about the college application process.

We would really appreciate any support for those going on this trip -- be it spiritual or monetary. We hope that we can make a difference in the lives of these people and come back as more enlightened and kinder individuals.
