Location: Vanua Levu Island, Fiji
Issue Area: Education
The relationship between Pepperdine students and the people of Fiji goes back several years. The Kinde Project on Vanua Levu Island, the second largest of the 322 islands that make up Fiji, began in 2008. Pepperdine students began working with the Kinde Project shortly thereafter.
While many know of the beauty and hospitality of Fiji, few realize that it is a country where many live in villages that may not have electricity or running water. Fiji Kinde Project addresses the need for education for Fijians by introducing early childhood education to remote villages in the outer Fiji islands by initiating and developing kindergartens. Fiji Kinde Project shares the gospel, trains local teachers, teaches preschoolers, and provides essential educational resources for the classroom.
This year, Pepperdine will send 7 students to work alongside Fijian teachers in the classroom. We will get hands on experience teaching local 4, 5, and 6 year olds in a kindergarten class, along with participating in Teacher-Inservice Training alongside the local teachers. We will also bring school supplies to give to the kindergarten classrooms we will serve.
Not only will we get to serve the local community while we are there, we also get to further explore our vocation. Each member of our team is an aspiring teacher. By supporting us, you are making a difference for the people of Fiji and allowing us to explore the call to teach. Please consider giving today.
