Location: Chicago, Illinois
Issue Area: Homelessness and Urban Renewal
The DOOR network is a faith-based network established in six cities which all provide opportunities for service, learning, and leadership development. Pepperdine has maintained a relationship with this organization for a few years now.
Many people think of mission trips involving a time of service in another country, but there is immense need in the United States alone. Chicago is one of those places in the US that offers the opportunity to serve within our home country. DOOR network in Chicago seeks to offer those seeking homes, support and opportunity. The organization offers programs that expose, educate, challenge, and motivate participants to respond to the issues and concerns facing an increasingly urban world.
This year, Pepperdine will send 19 students during our spring break to partner with DOOR in Chicago. We will have the opportunity to stay at the First Church of the Brethren as well as depend on the city’s public transportation system as we dedicate the week engaging in a variety of service projects. The projects will include serving hot meals at several homeless shelters, working at food pantries to sort and organize materials, and painting and cleaning elementary schools. We also will have the opportunity to learn about the community we are serving by engaging with community leaders to discuss the issues within Chicago.
We have the opportunity to serve an urban area within the United States, but we also have the opportunity to grow spiritually this week, individually and as a team. Each team member has committed to this service project and is excited to serve. Please consider supporting us on our trip through prayers and financial support!
