THE DOCUMENTARY
This is a film about the power of an idea. A simple suggestion, put forward by two Pepperdine law students, led to deep and systemic changes in the Ugandan criminal justice system and benefited thousands of people, including an innocent boy who was freed from prison and is now in medical school. Viewers will experience a piece of this story by following twelve of our students as they travel to Uganda to work with High Court judges--and come face to face with the prisoners they are trying to help.
As you see in the teaser above, we completed ten days of filming in Uganda during the summer of 2014. What happened during those ten days in the Luzira Maximum Security Prison was life-changing for our students and for the prisoners they assisted. It also catalyzed a dramatic change in the judicial system of an entire country. In order to tell the rest of the story, we need to go back to Uganda this summer to film the aftermath of this prison project and show how literally thousands of prisoners are now receiving access to justice because of this important work. We also need to capture our students on camera one year later as they reflect back upon how this intense experience changed them permanently.
A portion of the proceeds of this campaign will also be used to enter the film in film festivals and to show this around the country on university campuses and in other appropriate venues. The last documentary filmed by the cinematographer on this project, John Pope, was called “Blood Brother” and it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. We are grateful for your assistance in helping turn this dream into a reality.
